Chulpan Khamatova

Actress, The Land of the Deaf

Chulpan Khamatova, born on the 1st of October 1970, is a People's Artist of Russia and a graduate of the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts.

Now the leading actress of both the Sovremennik Theatre and the Theatre of Nations, she made her 1998 debut as Patrice Hollman in Erich Remarque's Three Comrades. She has since performed in many plays at both theatres, including Miss Julie and Enemies: A Love Story 

Khamatova began her cinema career during her third year at university when she was invited to play Katya in Time of the Dancer. Her breakthrough role as Rita in Valery Todorovsky's  The Land of the Deaf won her acclaim among both audiences and critics as one of the most gifted young actresses in Russian cinema. Her career has gone from strength to strength – she has performed in over thirty films and mini-series both at home and abroad.

In 2006, Khamatova, along with her fellow actress, Dina Korzun set up the “Podari Zhizn Foundation”, a charity for children suffering from serious oncological, haematological, and other illnesses.

She has three children.
